Dexter: “About Last Night”

I have utmost faith in Jimmy Smits. He can really pull off a role, especially a difficult and complicated one like Miguel Prado. Even so, as I read the scanty episode summaries that have been floating around for some of “Dexter’s” upcoming episodes, I began to seriously doubt the direction the show was going. They seemed to be implying that Miguel would somehow get close to Rita in a way that made Dexter uncomfortable, which I just couldn’t picture.

Well, they finally started going in that direction on tonight’s episode, and I get it! I totally get it! I should never have doubted anything involving Jimmy Smits. He’s started to get all charming with Rita and it’s just ugh because we all know he’s a secret killer. Oh, by the way, he killed that DA Ellen Wolf. Of course. As if they could have been implying anything else.

Only Miguel’s wife seems fully aware that something terrible and underhanded is going on. She’s worried that he’s cheating on her, which is what leads Rita to have a heart-to-heart with him in the first place…but only Dexter knows the darkness that truly lies beneath. Miguel is a killer and he’s a killer without solid rules about who deserves to die. That makes him dangerous.

On the plus side, that whole Skinner thing is pretty much in the bag. No one really cared anyway. Anton is safe, although missing some skin, and they know who the culprit is. Now to catch him. It shouldn’t be too hard, the guy trims trees. He’s got a very visible job.

This episode was a little light on the killing-action, but you could cut the tension with a knife. Dexter has finally realized the incredible burden that Harry bore - knowing that he had taught a man how to kill. While it’s possible Miguel has been doing this for a while, right now it seems like Dexter is responsible for unleashing a monster.

Oh, and that shirt that Miguel gave Dex? The one with “Freebo’s” blood on it? That ain’t Freebo’s blood. Oh snap. It’s animal blood. So that whole “trust” thing? Not happening.

Dexter, Dexter. Why didn’t you listen to your subconscious, in the form of your dead adoptive father, telling you not to get involved with this guy?
