Dexter: “Turning Biminese” 10/26

Here, Dexter gets his first taste of what living a normal life would mean. After trying to solve the Astor problem by proposing to Rita, he runs across yet another problem: being married might mean giving up his privacy. And Dexter values his privacy. It’s where he keeps his blood slides and his research and his Dark Passenger.

Dexter is a wonderful character because you can really feel his panic when he’s backed into a corner. Panic is really the only emotion he feels, and it hits very hard when he feels like his well-balanced life might get disturbed. Despite Dexter and Rita’s closeness, they haven’t discussed moving in together - and when she springs the idea of house-hunting onto him, he backs away like a frightened animal.

He says he can’t go because he’s planned a “fishing trip,” which coincides strangely with Miguel Prado’s informing him of a wife-killer who walked free. Dexter takes a little sojourn to Bimini to teach the killer a lesson, but something bad happens while he’s gone - and with Rita in the hospital and the fate of the baby in the balance, Dexter is nowhere to be found.

This might not be the first time that Dexter’s Dark Passenger has interfered with his personal life, but it’s the first time it really matters. How long before Rita starts asking too many questions? She may have been a victim before, but she’s demonstrating before that she won’t roll over again if she feels like a man is using her.

Meanwhile, Miguel Prado might be smarter than Dexter thinks. And maybe he didn’t let that story about the wife-killer slip by accident.

Dexter is a show that’s really going places. Which is nice, with so many shows flatly following the same formula every week - Dexter is always offering up something different. I’m not sure how far they will take this Miguel plotline, especially if he’s not returning next season, but I hope it’s awesome.
