Diary of the Dead: Coming Sooner Than You Might Realize!
Okay…everybody just calm down for a second. Because I got news that’ll blow your ever-lovin’ mind if you’re a horror buff like yours everfreakintruly.
Everybody knows this guy, right?
That, right there, is George Romero. He’s the guy who, just barely forty years ago, braved convention and indignation alike to bring us Night of the Living Dead, the horror movie to end all horror movies and indeed began an entire subgenre of horror, survival horror.
On February 15th, he’s got a new movie out in theatres. And yes, Virginia, it’s a zombie movie.
That’s right, folks…it’s called Diary of the Dead and it’s got me on the edge of my seat already. Finally, after so long, George Romero is taking back the creations he started and is putting them fully and absolutely in play. Filmed and bankrolled by his very own production company, Romero-Grunwald Productions, it’ll be out in theatres in roughly six weeks.
Follow that through to its logical conclusion and you too will be squealing with glee. It’s his production company.
A Shot At Redemption
There were those out there who said that the old man has lost it…that Land of the Dead was the swan song for the Romero zombie movie. To those naysayers, I say, hold your piece. This time, it’s all Romero, and if he bungles this one I’ll be right there with you saying it’s time to hang up the belt.
This has to be a high-pressure situation for George–he’s got to know that Land of the Dead did not fare well critically or at the box office. He has to know there are plenty of die-hard Romero fans convinced that Land was right next to the Snyder Dawn and Day as the worst of the lot. And most importantly, he’s got to know everything I’ve already said–this is going to be, for the first time in a long time, a Pure Romero Film.
No executive meddling. No pursestring hangups. Nothing to stand between Romero and his vision. Thus it begs one major and vital question:
Can he pull it off?
And until that day comes where we get our answer, come on down and play the various George Romero movie trivia at Kwanzoo.

Romero certainly has nothing to prove. “Land of the Dead” had its moments, I thought, not all that bad. When you get down to it, though, he made two great movies: Night of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead. The others are sort of optional, I’d say.
A great DVD to check is out in the wake of “I Am Legend” is the Vincent Price movie “The Last Man on Earth.” It’s terrific and establishes some of the zombie rules often credited to Romero.
In any case, I’ll be on line for Diary!
Glenn–you’ve got it dead-bang that Night and Dawn are definitely tops on the list with the rest just sort of marking time, and you’re preaching to the choir that he’s still the king of survival horror. But the problem is, there’s a LOT of let-down fans out there who say that he’s past his prime. And let’s be honest here…Land was not that great. It was good, sure enough…but it’s MERELY good, and in a field of ground-breaking innovative cinema merely good looks like pounded garbage. And I will see you in that line, man–February can’t come soon enough!
