E3 news: Final Fantasy XIII coming to the Xbox 360
During Microsoft’s press conference at E3 today, Square-Enix made official a longstanding rumor: The next game in the blockbuster Final Fantasy series will be on the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3.
This is big news because new Final Fantasy games have been PlayStation exclusives for over a decade, and Sony needs high-profile exclusives to push sales of the PS3.
It only makes sense for Square-Enix, though. As expensive as it is to make a game like this, they can’t rely on putting it out on a platform that has less than half as many units sold in the U.S. For the same reason, the 360 version probably won’t see the light of day in Japan, where the 360’s market share is relatively minuscule.
The port could be a while, though. If the Kotaku notes are correct, they’re only going to start working on the 360 version after they finish the PS3 version AND finish the English localization. However, the engine is already said to be not platform-specific, which fueled rumors of a 360 version in the first place.
Anyway, there’s a new trailer up for FFXIII, though some of the footage itself is old. It has pretty much everything you’d expect from a Final Fantasy game: airships, summons and a delicate-looking male character with full pouty lips.
