Escape From New Lanark
British director Neil Marshall recently gained notoriety in both the U.S. and his homeland for 2005’s The Descent. With a cast of unknowns and an elaborate series of sets, he was able to create a unique and chilling horror film. Now, he’s at it again - with a film that looks awfully familiar.
A casual glance at the trailer for Marshall’s upcoming Doomsday might give you the impression that someone’s remaking Escape From New York. And, in a way, he is - Marshall freely admits that the heroine, played by Rhona Mitra, is based on Snake Plissken.
Doomsday is all about a killer virus - of course. The virus ravages Scotland, leaving the government no clear choice but to barricade everyone in. Believing they have contained the virus, everyone returns to life as usual. But 25 years later, the virus emerges again and Eden Sincalir (Mitra) leads an elite task force past the barricade to find the cure. Sure, we’ve seen it all before, but Marshall has a unique flair for horror that sets Doomsday apart.
Reportedly, he even tried to coax Sean Connery out of retirement to play an eccentric scientist. He got Malcolm McDowell instead, which is at least as good.
Originally presented at the 2007 Comic-Con as a Rogue Pictures production, Doomsday is now being released on a much larger scale with Universal Studios on March 14th.
