The first two choices to play Frank in Little Miss Sunshine were Bill Murray and Robin Williams. At the time Steve Carell was cast, he was relatively unknown in Hollywood. Because the film took so long to release, by the time it was being advertised, Carell had become a star and a major pull into the film.
All of the other beauty pageant contestants in Little Miss Sunshine are actual pageant veterans, wearing their original gowns and makeup, and performing their original routines.
Mary Lynn Rajskub, who plays the popular and awkward Chloe on 24, appears briefly as a pageant assistant in Little Miss Sunshine.
Unlike most films, Little Miss Sunshine was actually filmed in chronological order.
