FLCL: It’s Not Nabeshin, But It’s Still Fantastic!
Six episodes. All lunacy. God bless Furi Kuri
Six episodes. That’s right…just six episodes comprise FLCL, one of the wildest non-Nabeshin anime to ever hit the world upside the head with a Flying V guitar and speed off on a tiny Vespa scooter into the night. And man am I glad it did.
A Note of Advance Warning
I likely will, at some point, go into full-bore fanboi mode during the course of this article. I can’t help myself, you see…FLCL is one of my absolute favorite anime, and gushing about it is just par for the course.
FLCL is also known as Furi Kuri or even Fooly Cooly for a set of reasons that are unnervingly complex and are mostly related to obscure connections to the Japanese language. Interestingly, “unnervingly complex and related to obscure connections to the Japanese language” is also a pretty fair way to describe the plot and the dialogue. Space pirates, sixth graders shooting way, way out of their league in terms of relationships, a medical supply company with delusions of grandeur operating out of a massive steam iron…this is all fair game in FLCL.
It has been successfully described as everything from a science fiction story to a commentary on modern society, and if you look hard enough, you’ll find elements of your personal favorite
And Yet, So Very Tragic
There’s only six episodes. This could have gone on for years, and considering that Neon Genesis Evangelion managed to pull off such a feat of longevity you’d think that something, you know, good might’ve managed the same. But no…sadly…no.
Too good to last, too weird to live, and too fast to die. Wherever you may be, Haruko Haruhara, may your scooter always ride straight and accompanied by The Pillows.
And before you get flatted by an insane chick on a Vespa swinging a guitar around causing your head to become a pandimensional gateway and free access for interstellar space pirates, you’d better take a run at our FLCL trivia.
