Flight of the Conchords Recaplet - 3/8 “New Zealand Town”

For some reason, drug metaphors never stop being funny. If you’re not sure what do with your characters, make them hooked on something. The sillier the better. Chocolate is good. Hair gel is better.

“New Zealand Town” followed this winning formula, with Murray making a desperate attempt to up the guys’ cool factor via copious applications of hair gel. It works: audiences at shows respond better, showing their appreciation for the guys’ cool new look by not leaving the room as soon as they begin playing. The guys feel better too. A little…too much better. When the gel is gone, Bret and Jemaine become shifty shut-ins with terrible hair. And they will stop at nothing to get their next fix.

What’s the first hairstyle we see Jemaine form with the gel in “New Zealand Town?”

a. fauxhawk
b. spiked
c. bedhead
d. slicked back

Murray, meanwhile, is obsessed with the idea of creating some kind of “New Zealand Town” for the next Conchords show, turning it into a cultural extravaganza to impress the Prime Minister and his pretty assistant (played by real-life Kiwi Lucy Lawless). Since he’s busy bustling around with this project that nobody else cares about, he fails to notice the rapid decline of the guys and their hair gel addiction.

In “New Zealand Town” it is revealed that Jemaine is part…

a. English
b. Irish
c. Maori
d. Tasmanian

I think it’s fair to say that this is the first FotC episode to have an utterly wacky premise. Most of the series has been grounded in the circumstances being a starving musician with no real ambition to have a real job, with a slightly surreal atmosphere fed by the fact that nobody on the show has any grasp on reality. Now they’re just going nuts with it. While it’s funny, it’s also often the death of a popular comedy series. I’m not sure if they’re consciously upping the ante or just don’t have any subtle ideas left, but as much as I’m enjoying this season, I really don’t need any more shows about hair gel addiction and turning to prostitution. I like the guys when they’re just being themselves. Mel brings enough crazy for everyone.
