Four Good Gadget Blogs

Ah, gadgets. You don’t need them, but you still want them. Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Like so many subjects, there’s a stable of good blogs to keep up with if you want to delve into the world of superfluous (but so appealing) technological gizmos. Here’s the Kwanzoo recommendations:

Gizmodo

Gizmodo is the front line for what’s happening in gadgets. Their update schedule is absolutely frantic. It’s 5 a.m. Eastern Time as I write this, and they’re still posting new stories.

Admittedly, some of it isn’t the hardest news, like linking to videos from The Onion, but sometimes you absolutely, positively want to know what’s happened in the last twenty minutes about gadgets.

iPhone owners may also want to peruse Gizmodo’s iPhone app directory, since the selection of offerings is becoming almost overwhelming. I’ll personally second their recommendation of the Yelp app.

Engadget

Engadget is another good all-purpose blog for gadgets. There’s plenty of stories about cell phones, GPS devices, laptops and so on.

If, however, you’re the sort of person who likes laughing all the way to the gallows or you’re just a fan of schadenfreude in general, try browsing by their economy tag.

After reading about that many layoffs in the technology sector, you’ll either appreciate your job a lot more or take comfort in the fact that you’re not alone among the unemployed.

Wired Gadget Lab

I bought a Wired in an airport about ten years ago, got sick on the plane, and developed a negative pavlovian reaction to the magazine’s signature contrasting color schemes. Luckly for me, the web-based Wired Gadget Lab is a traditional black text on a white background.

Like a lot of people, Wired is keeping a close eye on Android, Google’s open-source cell phone OS, seen by many as a challenger to the iPhone.

In keeping with the open source aesthetic, the Gadget Lab frequently reports on hacks for gadgets. Those who don’t mind voiding a warrenty or two might want to take a look.

Ars Technica

You should know up front that I’m a bit biased against the gaming section of Ars. I’ve still got a chip on my shoulder about Ben Kuchera’s review of the excellent God Hand. That was just uncalled for, Ben.

In general, though, Ars is rock solid, and that extends to their gadget section. Their CES trip produced a trove of interviews for gadget enthusiasts.

For someone looking to get into the PC-building game, the Ars Technica guides are legendary. The site regularly publishes system recommendations for both budget builders and tinkerers with a little more money to spend. The performance gaming boxes, for instance, will surely strain anyone’s wallet.
