Games I want to play: The Simple 2000 series

You’ve probably never heard of the The Simple 2000 series. It’s a line of video games in Japan that are a) simple and b) 2,000 yen, or a little under $20 American. A lot of these games could accurately be described as shovelware, but with the low budget, the developers can experiment sometimes and emerge with a rough gem. One such game was released stateside as Earth Defense Force 2017, and it’s the most co-op fun you can have with your pants on.

Now just read the title of this Simple 2000 game and tell me this could be anything but awesome.

Ambulance Vs. Zombie.

Yes, it’s real.

You play the last doctor alive in a city overrun with zombies. You commandeer an ambulance to go pick up survivors and bring them back to the hospital. The more zombies you run over, the more your mechanics will be able to upgrade your ride with things like a zombie plow and spiked wheels.

The game is for the PS2, and it’s definitely a budget game. The draw-in fog is short, and the models look kind of stiff. But Ambulance vs. Zombie.

If ever there were a game begging for a next-gen remake with ragdoll physics, it would be this. Zombies are my favorite monster. They’re slow, they’re dumb, and they serve as a convenient metaphor for society in a pinch.

  1. The Japanese know and understand zombies very, VERY, well. I point you in the direction of “Junk” if you haven’t already seen it because it is twenty pounds of zombie joy contained in a five pound Japanese sack.
