The Tarn Adams interview, part 2

July 23rd, 2008 Matthew Boyd 5 comments

(Part 1 of this interview appears here.)

Matt: Getting back to the subject, Dwarf Fortress really is a game that’s unlike any other, in that you have all these little individual guys running around with their own wants and needs instead of, say, construction drone #27. And now you’re kind of expanding that to cover a whole world instead of one fortress.

Tarn: Yeah, we’ve always been into that sort of detail. Even if it is to chuckle at their personalized misfortunes.

Tarn Adams interview, part 1 of 3

July 22nd, 2008 Matthew Boyd 8 comments

Dwarf Fortress is a game of unparalleled scope, where tiny dramas happen daily between ASCII characters. The game’s programmer, Tarn Adams, was kind enough to talk with us about gaming and living life on donations, and whether Dwarf Fortress will ever be a little more user-friendly.

Matt: Could you introduce yourself briefly for our readers?

Blood Runs Clear on YouTube

July 18th, 2008 Steve Anderson 8 comments

Folks, I’ve been saying it almost relentlessly for weeks now–the theatres are getting crippled by home-based media.  Improving technologies, increased access to original non-studio material, no driving, no outrageous concessions prices, and nobody performing any of the dozens of discourtesies connected to modern theatregoing add up to a package that’s becoming irresistible to more and more entertainment seekers.

And so the era of the internet comes into its own as an entertainment medium.  Not only do we have access to the greatest of Hollywood via legal services like Netflix, Amazon, Blockbuster Online and iTunes just for starters, but also directly through video sites like YouTube.

Exclusive Interview: David Denman of “The Office”

July 18th, 2008 Liz N. 1 comment

First things first, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to talk to us. You’ve appeared in an impressive array of projects, from The X-Files to Smart People and, of course, The Office. Next week, your new film Take will be released in theaters, co-starring Minnie Driver and Jeremy Renner.

Let’s begin with The Office, since it’s one of your more prominent roles. How did you end up on the show? Was Roy originally intended to be a one-shot character, or did you know that you were signing up for an important recurring role?

The Death of Cinema–I Am Not Alone Here

June 30th, 2008 Steve Anderson 16 comments

I’ve been throwing up regular bits of evidence for the last few weeks now that, when taken together, provide a pretty big clue that something is going to have to change in the movie theatre industry, or the whole concept is doomed to failure.  Let’s take a quick rundown of the salient points:

1. DVD sales are in several cases outselling theatrical sales.  Most notable example: Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro.

Putting Disabled Gamers Back in the Game

May 15th, 2008 Matthew Boyd 15 comments

When Mark Barlet called his lifelong friend Stephanie Walker, she was in tears.

“I can’t feel my right hand, and I can’t play,” she said. “I want to play, but I can’t.”

Stephanie had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and now had little to no feeling in her right side. She’d quickly gone from working a full-time job to not being able to walk or feed herself. She just wanted to spend a night on EverQuest with her friends like before, but now even that was cut off to her.

Four years later, Stephanie is the associate editor of Ablegamers.com, and Mark is the editor-in-chief. They’re part of a community that sees that disabled gamers don’t have to lose an important part of their life, even when developers have lagged behind on accessibility.

How to Get Free Screener DVDs from Studios

April 24th, 2008 Liz N. 1 comment

Being a movie critic isn’t all fun and games, you know. What with the late-night screenings, nerd-laden conventions, being legally obligated to watch the latest Tyler Perry film…the perks are many, but they barely make up for the stress. Except, perhaps, for one.

Free Screener DVDs.
