Entertainment Beats: Kwanzoo marches on.

Evening, everyone. Hope you had a good weekend and a tolerable Monday.

First things first. We’ve got new video game trivia for
The Gran Turismo Series, The Tony Hawk Series, The Twisted Metal Series and skate.

I sent off the first test load today for the new NFL/NCAA football trivia channel. We expect to have that up very soon now.

Entertainment Beats 2: State of the Trivia

Afternoon, folks. There’s a couple of new things happening on this side to mention today.

First, “The Board” feature is finished. If you go to any player’s profile page, like, say, mine, you can leave a public note for them down around the bottom of the page. It’s like those whiteboards everyone uses in college dorms, except you can’t draw dirty pictures on them. More’s the pity, I’m sure.

Next, if I may draw your attention over to the top right of this page, we’ve revamped the blog sidebar somewhat. Where there used to be big “Play trivia now!” buttons, there’s now links to specific topics. We figured people tended to stick around more regularly if they were introduced to the site via a topic they were comfortable with rather than just being thrown into the mix. It’s just a better introduction to the site overall.

Entertainment Beats: a Kwanzoo News Update

Kwanzoo continues its march out of beta!

We got the celebrity trivia channel up and running. Sports is next, and the NFL and NCAA football channel should be going live in a few weeks.

We’ve got kind of a long pipeline on our staff-written trivia, so we’re still gradually adding new content on the site in movies & TV, celebrity and video games. There’s a steady stream of 150 to 300 new questions in each of our channels every week, the idea being to give people a reason to visit regularly. You may notice the new topics are announced here or on the front page.

Every so often we hear something from you guys that gives us that extra boost! It is what helps us wake up every morning, and go back to building the kind of social trivia site we believe you would want to be on!

Here are some of the comments we’ve picked out that caught our eye!

All I Want Is Great Content!

When we first started working on Kwanzoo, we visited a whole lot of trivia sites out there. We still do. There are some good ones, to be sure. But the better ones we’ve seen do not allow users to submit content into their trivia game. And the ones that do allow user-submitted content have at least some of the following issues:

Give me 10 questions on 1 topic. Or don’t give me any questions at all!

Crunchies Aren’t Just Cereal or Candy Anymore!

Update: Nominations are closed as of Dec 12th 2007 midnight PST. Thank you all for your support!

In the startup world, something new came along today. We had Techcrunch, GigaOm, Read/Write Web and VentureBeat announce that they were seeking nominations for their new Crunchies Awards. They are looking for the best startups from around the world. There are several nominee categories. While we do not know what exactly they are looking for, the one award we would love to get is their Best time sink site award!

And the reason is simple. If you guys feel we are worthy of this award, we are doing our job! If we really had our way, we would be quite happy waking up every day, clicking over to Kwanzoo, and seeing our Leaderboard movin’ and shakin’. See, that would tell us that you guys love the site, and want to keep coming back!

IMDb and the Power of Random Discovery

I love IMDb. What I like best is that every visit to the site feels like an entirely new experience. It sorta feels like the information on IMDb is organized the way our brains really work! Most of us do not keep information in great detail in neat little silos or nicely cataloged index cards. We track information more with just a pointer or link to one thing. When we come across that pointer it triggers something in us. As we go deeper through that pointer, we find ourselves being lead to a seemingly random discovery of many more related links or connections.

Pottery - Random Discovery ProcessTake today’s IMDb headlines for example. The movie Beowulf is listed as a Top 5 movie at the box office. I clicked on the movie name, and discovered the director was Robert Zemeckis. Somewhere in my brain a little light bulb went off. Hey, wasn’t this the same director who made a ground-breaking movie with humans and animated characters interacting in a live action setting for the first time? Anyone remember Who Framed Roger Rabbit?? I clicked on the director link to see his filmography. Sure enough, it was there. It came out in 1988 and was a trailblazer!

Why “Kwanzoo”? (Where did the name come from?)

We were sitting around, thinking up ideas for a cool website where we could hang out with friends. It had to be something different - not yet another social networking site! How about a game? But could we keep it friendly, stress-free? A place for everyone, from the truly passionate to the “I’m just here to chill” kind of person. A fun place to hang out?

We had to be different, and a whole lot better! We wanted a cool-sounding name for the site, which also meant something positive. And it came together in a completely unexpected way. We remembered this bit from the movie Jerry Maguire:
