Action Games Good For Your Eyesight, Suggest Study

April 1st, 2009 Matthew Boyd 1 comment

Here’s some interesting news by way of Wired and Yahoo. A study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience suggests that playing action games may improve visual acuity.

This would represent a stunning reversal over my mother, who always told me I would go blind.

TF2 vs. LF4: Fight!

March 17th, 2009 Matthew Boyd No comments

I’d put down both of Valve’s multiplayer offerings for a while, but after being prodded by a few friends on Steam, I picked both of them up again.

Left 4 Dead may be newer and more expensive, but I have to go with Team Fortress 2 as the better online game.

I’m Not Sure Why I Bother At Fighting Games

March 4th, 2009 Matthew Boyd No comments

Every time a new fighting game comes out, I get it in my head that this time, I’m going to learn how to play it properly. I dig in to a character, master a few combos and special moves, and once I feel like I’ve got a good feel for it, I challenge someone else.

That’s when I get destroyed by the rankest of amateurs, and quit in disgust again. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the fighting game genre, I just don’t have the patience to develop the skillset that’s required.

Where Does Music Go From Here?

February 21st, 2009 Liz N. No comments

Lately, I’ve found myself afflicted by something I like to call Playlist Ennui. A lot of the time, when I pop on my iPod to listen to some tunes, I end up clicking through hundreds of songs at a time because I’m just so sick of the same old thing. Even the fact that I’ve accumulated over 2,000 mp3s doesn’t save me from the dreaded Playlist Ennui, because I’ve had most of them for years, and that’s plenty of time to make it through a few thousand songs a few hundred times. The problem with finding new music nowadays is that there is way too much out there. It’s not as simple as just tuning into the radio; there’s MySpace and Last.fm and hundreds of other websites that can throw handfuls of recommendations at you without batting an eye. It’s overwhelming. Take a deep breath. I can help.

The Steelers deserve to be in the Super Bowl

January 26th, 2009 Matthew Kimel No comments

Prior to the start of the season, I (and many others) thought the Pittsburgh Steelers had the toughest schedule of all NFL teams. Boy, was I wrong. The Steelers and those terrible towels are now headed to Tampa to play in the Super Bowl.

Please Pardon Our Dust

December 4th, 2008 Matthew Boyd No comments

We’re taking a little time to organize. (The bytes are being dusted by hand. It’s a laborious process.)

We’ll be back later in the week, better, stronger, harder, faster, and, as always, able to tell you what that’s a reference to.

Useless DLC vs. Useful DLC

November 8th, 2008 Matthew Boyd No comments

There’s two kinds of downloadable content for video games out there. On one hand you have things like “Bring Down The Sky” for Mass Effect, a new episode for the game that gives you more… well, game. I like this kind.

On the other hand, you have what seems like every other DLC package. Instead of providing more game for the money, they’re more like ring tones. They’re little vanity things that you’re expected to drop cash on just because… uh, well, I guess I’ve never really understood why people paid out the wazoo for ring tones, so I’m not much help here.
