Gators, and Trojans and Spartans…Oh my!

A few weeks ago a certain sports writer picked the Florida Gators to win the BCS Championship game, and they certainly looked the part today as they took a 56-0 lead against Hawaii by the end of the third quarter. It’s interesting to note that 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow had the “worst” game of his career, statistically speaking.

Southern California romped to a 52-7 victory over Virginia, quarterback Mark Sanchez outplayed my expectations as he completed 26-of-35 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns. The Trojans ran for 218 yards despite the fact that not one player ran for over 100 yards.

The top 25 ranking system proved once again to be flawed as No. 24 Alabama crushed No. 9 Clemson, East Carolina came from behind to beat No. 17 Virginia Tech and Bowling Green upset No. 25 Pittsburgh.

I was at Spartan Stadium to witness San Jose State beat U.C. Davis 13-10 in one of the ugliest victories of all-time.

The Spartans received the ball on the opening kickoff, and starting quarterback Myles Eden got them in field goal range, but kicker Jared Strubeck failed to make the 42-yard attempt.

The Aggies took advantage of the situation and capitalized on a four play 74 yard drive, ending in a 54-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daniel Alfaro to wide receiver Bakari Grant.

The Spartans next two possessions ended in turnovers and the Aggies were able to tack on a field goal late in the first quarter, but they would not score again for the remainder of the game.

Spartans’ Jordan La Secla replaced Eden with 8:30 remaining in the first. La Secla completed his first two passes, but after throwing an interception on his third pass, coach Dick Tomey put Eden back in the game.

Eden failed to put the Spartans on the board in the second quarter, as well as on the opening drive of the third. Oddly, the Spartans received the kickoff to start both the first and second half of the game.

On the Aggies first drive of the third quarter Alfaro fumbled the ball after being crushed by Adonis Davis in the backfield. Jeff Schweiger, a transfer from Southern California, recovered the fumble.

Tomey chose to put in Kyle Reed, a transfer from California, and suddenly the Spartans looked like a completely different team. Reed got the Spartans on the board in a 12 play 43 yard drive. The extra point by Strubeck was blocked.

Reed re-rallied the Spartans down the field in the middle of the forth, and the Spartans attempted a 43-yard field goal on a 4th and 9 situation at the Aggies 27 yard line. Once again, Strubeck missed.

Time was running out for the Spartans, and they had already run out of timeouts when they got the ball at their own 36 yard line with 1:29 left to play in regulation.

Reed and wide receiver Kevin Jurovich were able to connect on three separate occassions, one of which was a 37 yard c-mpletion that put the Spartans in the red zone, the other, a 17-yard game winning touchdown on 4th and 13 from the Aggies 17 yard line.

Reed will start for the Spartans next week on the road at Nebraska.

Nebraska may be a HUGE favorite, but MAYBE San Jose State can pull it off…
