George Romero’s New Non-Zombie Movie–It’s Not Good News

I hate to say this…really I do…but it seems that the Grand Old Man of horror movies, George Romero, has a new movie in the works and it’s not looking good.

It’s got an oddly familiar title, Deadtime Stories, and the stories involved look a mite, well…PEDESTRIAN.

Okay, leave aside the fact that the title has already been done. And in the same three-vignette format, no less.  It also was not by Romero, either, so can this really be called a remake?  Either picture is bad enough, frankly: either George Romero himself is engaging in that same kind of idea theft that runs Hollywood, or Geroge Romero is down to making remakes of other people’s work.  Okay, so you can’t copyright a movie title, but damn–George Romero should be better than this.

The content of the movie proves no better–the three vignettes (no word yet if there’s a wraparound story involved) are about Martian dust that cures disease up to the point where it reanimates the dead, some stranded hikers who start eating each other one piece at a time, and a college professor whose affair with a student goes horribly awry.

Leave aside that Stephen King already DID that second story with his Skeleton Crew short “Survivor Type”, the other two are knockoffs of his OWN work and one More Of The Same story respectively.

What precisely if anything this means for shooting on current work “…Of The Dead”, well, frankly, I can’t tell.  I can’t imagine it means anything good but by the sounds of things Deadtime Stories is nearly complete already, and so it really won’t interfere much with the zombie joy, still slated for release in 2009.

I’m not any too happy about this, though, no matter how it sorts out.  George Romero, you can do better than this drivel!
