Ghostbusters 3: Really Happening.

No, it’s not April 1st. I promise.

After decades of speculation about a possible threequel to the beloved ’80s comedy, especially since the development of the upcoming video game, it’s suddenly, finally happening. Fans are still in shock, and nobody knows quite what to think. Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, co-writers/executive producers on The Office, are writing the script, which will (supposedly) bring together the original cast of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson.

How did this happen?

With almost everyone naysaying those who dared to dream of this day, it’s hard to believe that things are coming together so fast. Ivan Reitman, the original director, is “aware and involved.” Rumors of Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and Romany Malco playing the “new Ghostbusters,” which were shot down in July, show no signs of truth - but the “next generation” plotline is definitely happening.

So, why now? Surely Ghostbusters 3 would have been most successful back in the series’ heyday. Then again, those who grew up watching the movie are now adults with their own wallets - and, in some cases, their own kids. This might be the perfect time to relase another Ghostbusters. Of course, it’s improbable that they’ve been saving it all this time - so what inspired them to get up and get going?

Two words: video game.

All the buzz created by the Ghostbusters video game made people aware of the demand for a movie sequel. Internet speculation always ended up with dozens of people declaring that they’d literally kill a man to see Ghostbusters 3, and the executives finally caught on to this devotion. So was the video game just a way to test the waters? Maybe, maybe not. But one thing’s for sure:

If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call?

GHOSTBUSTERS!

(If there’s something weird
and it don’t look good
Who you gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS!

I ain’t afraid of no ghosts
I ain’t afraid of no ghosts!)
