You may already be familiar with the Ghostbusters news that my able cohort Liz mentioned in her piece on WonderCon. But a recent piece of data has come to light thanks to the folks at Slashfilm.

That “Look for the big announcement at Comic Con San Diego 2008” that Liz mentioned? Ah…most people think it has something to do with an upcoming video game, but this was before Slashfilm took a closer look. When they looked at the tease, they noticed four key words:

“Sony Pictures Home Entertainment”.

Now, there’s a few possibilities for this. With the addition of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, however, it somewhat drops the chances that we’re merely talking about a video game release. In fact, there’s some stirrings that bringing in Sony Pictures Home Entertainment can only mean one of two things: one, a simple Blu-ray rerelease of the original Ghostbusters series.

The other rumor will shake Ghostbusters fans to their very core, for there’s some indication that brining in Sony Pictures Home Entertainment means that the rumors are true: the direct-to-video CG sequel once titled “Hellbent” now exists. A script has already been written for it, according to Bloody Disgusting, and that means something big. “Hellbent”, the first original Ghostbusters material since 1998 and the cartoon series “Extreme Ghostbusters” (which didn’t last long), may well be on its way.
