Hollywood once again proves how desperately it needs a shot of originality as it goes back to the Hannibal the Cannibal well once again for a sequel to Hannibal Rising.

Now Fifty Percent More Convoluted!

A sequel…to Hannibal Rising. Why am I horrified by this? Not because of ol’ Hannibal’s predilection for lunching up his own species with fava beans and a nice chianti, but rather because of the overall canon.

It’s getting to the point where you need a diagram to deal with all this. We started out with Manhunter, but things didn’t get big until Silence of the Lambs. Okay, no problem. Then Red Dragon hit and that was cool. We’re still going forward. And Hannibal Rising’s prequel was cool. But now we’re doing sequels to prequels. And that makes things twitchy.

Will Hannibal Rising 2, whatever it’s actually called, be before or after Manhunter? Does anyone involved with Hannibal Rising 2 even remember Manhunter sufficiently to include it in the proceedings? Or is that chunk of the continuity going to fall victim to studio greed and be ground into the dust?

I Don’t Look For the Studios To Be Gentle.

The probable answer is, the continuity’s just ruined now.
