So while I was having Fourth of July dinner with all the local family assembled, I found out a rather interesting factoid.

My dad wanted to see Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.

Now, this by itself is somewhat unusual in that my dad is a sixtyish homebody who’d sooner stay home than do just about anything on Earth including take a trip to the Land of Free Gold, but it’s further augmented by the fact that he doesn’t watch very many movies.  Which means he’s pretty much a blank slate when it comes to film and doesn’t have much of a basis of comparison.

He caught an edited version of the original Hellboy on network TV not too long ago, and then caught one of the omnipresent commercials running in the background on pretty much every TV channel everywhere, and decided that that looked GOOD.

Which, frankly, I can’t blame him for–Hellboy’s sequel looks like it’s going to manage to be far better than the original, which is a comparative rarity of filmmaking.  They shot the scope of the new one through the roof, and actually look like they’ll have plenty more action in it.  With a series like Hellboy, scope and action are two choice ingredients.

And if my film-virgin dad likes the idea, well, how can we not?
