How Seth MacFarlane Deals With Rejection
Back in May, a new highly exclusive club called the Crown Bar opened in Hollywood. Since then, it’s gained quite a reputation for turning away the type of clientele that probably shouldn’t be turned away from anywhere - paparazzi have captured one particular doorman turning away some recognizable faces,
including, most recently, Seth MacFarlane.
Currently the highest-paid T.V. producer in the business, Seth was on his way to enjoy some of the perks that come with being filthy rich - until the doorman turned him away. Luckily, TMZ’s ever-vigilant camerafolk were there to catch the moment, and Seth turned to them in frustration and struck up a conversation. Soon they began egging him on to repeat “giggity giggity,” the catchphrase of Glenn Quagmire, one of the many “Family Guy” characters that he voices. When Seth finally obliged, something seemed to click with the doorman - and he invited the multi-millionaire into the club.
Cool as a cucumber, Seth replied that he didn’t want to go in because he was “talking to these gentlemen” (gesturing to the paparazzi). He then kept the doorman (and his friends inside) waiting for some time while he kept chatting with the photogs.
The next day, he sent several bouquets of flowers - totalling $5,000 worth - to the bar. Which, I guess, was his subtle way of saying “I could buy and sell all of you.”
Most people seem pleased by his actions; his subtle disrespect of the doorman, his gracious yet threatening gift. I’m not sure how I feel about it. I used to consider MacFarlane one of my personal heroes, mostly because of his vast talent and clever sense of humor. But the more I’ve seen of him the more I’ve noticed that he is bitter, egotistical, and clinging tightly to an agenda.
A commenter on TMZ called celebutaunter77 provides an extreme example of how some people have reacted badly to MacFarlane’s recent work.
I used to love Family guy, then he called me and everyone I know a Nazi. I have since thrown away my entire Family guy collection on DVD and banished it from my Tivo.
Not all of your fans are Liberals Seth.
The commenter is referring to a gag in the episode “Road to Europe” in which Stewie, going undercover as a Nazi officer, finds a McCain/Palin campaign button attached to the lapel of his uniform. It’s a cheap shot, as Godwin’s law always is, and you just can’t shake the unpleasant feeling that MacFarlane really believes this. Not that John McCain is tantamount to Hitler, of course, but that his views tilt in the direction of fascism.
No doubt, MacFarlane doesn’t care about losing viewers. He’s been in the business way too long. I’m not sure if his treatment of the doorman indicates that he is gracious, or merely mature, but either way it’s fun to watch.
