Here’s one from the “Duh Magazine” section—it shouldn’t come as a surprise to absolutely anyone that I Am Legend is still tearing up the box office, and as such, the latest Will Smith vehicle has a sequel in process. How can I tell? There’s a slot for it already made on the IMDB.

I Am Another Legend

The concept, of course, makes me shrug in a sort of mild, fatalistic derision. Of course there’s going to be a sequel. This sucker’s been in theaters, what, three weeks now? And it’s still in the top ten? That kind of staying power all but guarantees at least one sequel.

We all know that you can’t have show business without including the word business—what’s good for business is good for show business—but I wish, I really do wish, that we could actually get something done that isn’t a sequel or a remake for once.

Whiny and Overgeneralizing

Yes, I know…I’m being whiny, and I’m overgeneralizing. Original stuff does make it to us on a fairly regular basis, but I’m downright sick and tired of the big chunk of the major releases that fall into the category of “remake” or “sequel”. The second I Am Legend is doubly egregious as it actually falls into both categories at once—a sequel of a remake.

It would be nice if we could take the cash these cash cows generate and use it to make new and interesting movies, but we don’t even get that bone thrown to us. No sir, we just get recast pablum and Hollywood continuing to cross its fingers and wish real hard that we won’t pay attention.

Getting through the various Will Smith trivia on Kwanzoo, however, will require that you pay attention.
