A fan of the Iron Man comics, Downey seemed like the logical choice for the role. His personal history is relevant to the role of Tony Stark, who, at various times during the comics, struggled with problems like alcoholism. Though production has yet to wrap on Iron Man, John Favreau has already said that a sequel is possible.
