Is It The Cocaine That Makes The Dark Knight Incomprehensible?
Well, I finally went and did it…I caught up with the rest of the civilized world and caught “The Dark Knight” in theatres.
See, I knew as soon as I saw the trailers on that one that it was going to be just NIGHTMARISHLY big. It was going to be a hit beyond all concept and standard of hit and, indeed, last I heard it was the number-two movie of all time and STILL GOING. So I knew going in that I was going to wait on that one for the hysteria to die down and for the crowds to thin out a bit because if there’s one thing I hate it’s a crowded house. Seriously–not fond of crowds. So I go Sunday night for the almost-late show at seven o’ clock, still manage to get in for under ten bucks INCLUDING popcorn and a twenty-ounce drink–Goodrich Quality Theatres, I loves ya!–and I watch it. And it’s unbelievable. You probably know that I don’t impress easily but I am severely impressed by The Dark Knight.
Which of course baffles me that, apparently, Robert Downey Jr. doesn’t understand it at all.
Okay, so there’s a possibility he’s just having a laugh because he’s the newest face of Marvel’s own Iron Man, but there’s one clear and strange difference here…he’s mocking The Dark Knight not because he doesn’t like it, but because it’s TOO COMPLEX for him. Is it the cocaine? Are cokeheads everywhere puzzling over the labyrinthine twists and turns of The Dark Knight’s surprisingly well-written script? Are Lindsay Lohan and George W. Bush and like a third of Hollywood just BAFFLED by The Dark Knight?
When asked during an interview with MovieHole.net about the Batman sequel, Downey said that he “didn’t get it. … [I] still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character.” He said that while watching the movie, it dawned on him, “I get it. This is so high-brow and so f***ing smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.” He then added, “You know what? F*** DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.”
So whether or not he means it is up in the air–I have sort of a policy of taking celebrity quotes at their word unless they say otherwise and since this is “where (he’s) really coming from” I doubt very much it’s a gag.
