Is The Fix In On Joss Whedon’s Next Movie?

Special attention to everyone out there in the blogosphere (see, Liz, you CAN use that word without your head exploding) who owns a “Joss Whedon Is My Master Now” t-shirt: you may want to get it out and gather pitchforks and torches for a run on MGM, because they’ve just about guaranteed that his next movie will fail. He’s been working with Drew Goddard, formerly of Cloverfield, on a new film called The Cabin in the Woods.

Though the plot of the movie is being held under the tightest of wraps, the plot BEHIND the movie is looking pretty clear–by all current indicators, MGM wants Whedon to tank, and do it quickly. Why, you ask? Because of the slated release date for Whedon’s newest opus: October 23.

Horror fans are already groaning, but for those of you what don’t habla let me bring you up to speed. October 23rd is one week ahead of the release of Lions Gate’s newest flagship iteration, Saw V.

A movie like The Cabin in the Woods, which is getting little promotional mojo–I haven’t so much as heard of a trailer yet and the plot’s being held hostage like MGM’s working a bank job–is at a serious disadvantage going up against Saw V. Sure, Saw fans are already grumbling with discontent, and it’s getting pretty clear that Twisted and Lions Gate have been phoning it in since Saw IV, but it’s SAW, dammit, and the chance of people going to much else that weekend is slim at best.

Does MGM actually think they have a Saw-killer in the form of the Whedon’s newest masterpiece? Or is MGM just throwing the title under the bus to satisfy contractual obligations by putting it in the worst time slot possible? We won’t know until October 23, so I’m definitely looking forward to it!

  1. Wait, you’re wondering where the trailer is for Cabin in the Woods? Well, I’ve personally never seen a trailer before a film has begun shooting, but hey… maybe that’s just me?

This movie is no Saw. Think Evil Dead II. That’s what they are going for, the typical (if there is such a thing) cabin in the woods movie. It’s a comedy. You know - something of quality.

  2. Yeah, Cabin in the Woods is coming out NEXT year. I suppose it might run up against competition from Saw VI, but that’s pure speculation at this point.
