James Bond: Girls, Guns, and Incoherent Rambling

Look. No matter how unrealistic it is, we all have certain expectations of actors who play roles that define them. Like, for instance, Daniel Craig, THE NEW JAMES BOND. I know he had a career before Casino Royale, and he’ll have one after he’s done with Bond, but right now he is Bond, and that’s just the image you expect him to put forward.

Well.

Recently, Craig, along with head of EON Barbara Broccoli and Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster, sat down for a Q&A session with representatives from several entertainment websites. AICN’s Capone put this fan-made question to the actor.

Capone: Do you prefer that the gadgets and the over-the-top villains be kept to a minimum as was the case with CASINO ROYALE?

Daniel Craig: Yes…kind of…yes I do. As I said, it’s extraordinary what technology does and I think that it’s not somewhere we’ve gone down. I think if we were to do a gadget film, we would have to do a movie about gadgets because listening devices–I mean I know very little but I do speak to some people who do know, and when they kind of start giving away bits of information about what you can do in a room like this–and I know got this room mic’ed up today. [laughs] Anybody who’s listening in, or listening from down the road, it’s just extraordinary and terrifying. And I think it’s too big a statement to make without making a really big statement in the movie. I’ve got no fear of it, it just has to be integral to the plot.

Maybe I’m just dense or confused, but I really cannot make sense of this. Some possible interpretations include:

1. Daniel Craig thinks that the government is listening to everything we say.

2. Daniel Craig is wearing a wire.

3. Daniel Craig hears voices.

5. Daniel Craig knows the secrets of “what you can do in a room like this.” (With what?)

6. Daniel Craig is unbelievably paranoid.

I think the last option is the most likely, and I’ll tell you why: I did a little detective work, and in his interview with UGO.com, when someone asked him about his favorite gadget from the previous films, he said:

I should come prepared for this answer shouldn’t ? [laughs] Should actually crib up a bit and think about it before I actually come, or maybe I’m just sort of pausing for effect. Oh god I don’t know. It would be difficult because I think that I, you know, I always say this about the gadgets. I mean look at this table it’s insane [laughs, looking at all our recorders] You know there’s not a moving piece of…there’s nothing moving on this table yet…it’s recording everything, it’s looking after everything.

Don’t worry, Daniel. A tinfoil hat will take care of all those pesky folks peering into your brain waves.

So, regarding the image, does Daniel Craig’s package also something to chime in with on the subject, or…?
