Johnny Depp–Public Enemy

This is not what a “Melvin Purvis” should look like. You know, every so often, a good idea pops up that just makes me look at it in bemusement and wonder why no one else had thought of it. And the casting for the upcoming film Public Enemies, as announced by the folks at CHUD.com, is one such good idea.

Christian Bale—American Psycho Cop

We all remember him from Batman Begins and American Psycho, two good solid films previously opined upon by my good blogger colleague Liz. In what appears to be a progression for Bale, he’s going from psycho to vigilante all the way back around to cop when he’ll be playing G-Man Melvin Purvis in Public Enemies. Not a bad choice for Bale, who definitely seems to be getting some respect. However, it’s likely to be his co-star that brings in the most mojo on the marquee, and you’ll understand when I tell you who it is.

Johnny Depp—Sweeney Jack Scissorhands

You can easily name half a dozen Johnny Depp movies, just from the header to this paragraph. In what seems to be a progression for him too, from hero to anti-hero all the way back to villain, Depp will be playing twenties-era uber gangster John Dillenger. And frankly, after watching him insane-mince his way through three pirate movies, I’ll be able to buy him pretty handily as a gun-crazy syphilitic lunatic.

A Match Made In Federal Court!

Depp as a villain and Bale as a hero—sure, it’s a bit of a stretch, but only a bit of a stretch. These two have been moving in those respective directions for some time now and it’s kind of nice to see the payoff. I’ll be eagerly awaiting the completion of these two character arcs.

But what I—or you, for that matter—don’t have to wait for is the amazing array of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale trivia on Kwanzoo. That’s always there. Just click a link and head on in.
