Juno Goes to Hell
By now, you’ve probably heard that Juno’s Ellen Page is slated to star in a passel of new movies, including Whip It, Smart People, and now, Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell.
Yes, apparently, he’s come back to horror after 15 years. Which, if you felt the same way I did about Spider-Mans 2 and 3, is a relief. Ellen Page seems like a really, really unlikely choice - but maybe that’s exactly what a horror movie needs, and exactly what’s made Sam Raimi such a cult favorite.
If I had my druthers, more productions would be cast this way. Why not, after all? A good actor is a good actor, and if you want to make a good, genre-defying movie, skill is the only thing you need to worry about. That ’70s Show become a wildly successful sitcom because they decided to cast, not comedians, but actors. What a novel idea. Who would have thought Kurtwood Smith could be so funny?
So, horror directors: when you find yourselves with your heads on a swivel, searching for the newest scream queen, how about thinking outside the box? That goes for all the rest of you. Michel Gondry’s decision to cast Jim Carrey in a mind-bending drama about lost love turned out to be the best of his career. Be a little courageous, and filmgoers will follow.
