Katherine Heigl Would Like Some Cheese With That Whine

It seems that disturbingly wide-set eyes are (is? Do wide-set eyes count as one problem, or two?) just the beginning of Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl’s problems. Even setting aside the tragic childhood accident that caused her to lose a vowel in her last name, there’s still the issue of her incessant whining.

I’m probably not being fair. After all, we only see a tiny bit of what she really says and thinks, the part she chooses to show to the media. But it’s her job to portray herself the way she wants to be seen, and right now she’s not coming across too well.

In case you haven’t heard the news, Heigl decided to preemptively withdraw her own name from consideration for the Emmys. Yes, that’s right - before the nominees are even announced. Her reasoning is that Grey’s Anatomy didn’t give her the “material” that she’d need to win.

I don’t even know where to start with this. It’s hugely insulting to the writers and producers of the show, of course. It’s also highly arrogant and bitter. And rather than give up that juicy medi-drama paycheck, she’d rather just whine about the show later. It almost seems like something you’d do if you were the kind of actress to star in a movie like Knocked Up, then call it sexist in an interview.

Oh, right, she did that too.

I’m not here to judge her interpretation of Knocked Up. To each his (OR HER!) own. Personally, I don’t think the movie’s weaknesses had anything to do with sexism, but if she believes they did, then so be it. I’d respect that opinion, if she hadn’t AGREED TO STAR IN THE FILM.

There’s no good explanation for that. Even if the film was edited considerably differently than she originally thought, she still had to film some of the scenes that she thinks portrayed women as “shrews, as humorless and uptight.” Once again, the almighty dollar ruled her decisions.

Come on, Katherine Heigl. You’re not doing anything to improve Hollywood’s credibility, if there’s any of it still worth saving.
