Know Thyself–Nic Cage and Rose Byrne in “Knowing”

What do you do when your child’s about to destroy the world? For once, we’ve got something from the “Not a Half Bad Idea” files—and it’s a mainstream Nicolas Cage movie. Okay, granted, it’s going to be a little familiar—remember when Nic Cage could predict the future, just not very far ahead, in Next? Well, this time around, he’s going to get the chance to predict a little farther out in his new thriller Knowing.

This time around, Cage is a schoolteacher who’s been assigned—I guess by the school itself—to examine the contents of a time capsule that was found at Cage’s son’s school. What he finds in there is somewhat disturbing: there’s a list of predictions inside the time capsule, and several of them have already come true. From here, this leads Cage to the unsettling conclusion that:

A. The world is going to end in roughly a week, and
B. His son is going to be somehow involved in the whole world-gets-destroyed thing.

Which is a pain from a parenting standpoint—what exactly IS a fair punishment for destroying the world? How does a parent try and be responsible around that? “Son, you’ve destroyed the entire planet and everything on it. No Xbox for a week.”

We won’t get to find out how Cage handles it in a parenting sense—shooting doesn’t even start until the seventeenth of March—any time soon, so until then, try some other science fiction movie trivia on Kwanzoo.
