Kwanzooween: “Scary Movie”

It’s Halloween, Kwanzoo style.

It’s hard to remember a time when the “Scary Movie” franchise used to be a positive thing. But back when the Wayans were actually involved, hey - they were kinda funny. This is a salute to the one that started it all, “Scary Movie.”

Taking its name from one of “Scream’s” working titles, “Scary Movie” parodies the parody, along with some serious movies like The Sixth Sense, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Blair Witch Project. Mostly, though, it lampoons all the horror clichés that “Scream” already covered, but that people never get tired of. I think it was a little on-the-nose to actually use the “Scream” mask, though.

Stoner heartthrob Anna Faris, “Scary Movie” is all about a killer who menaces clueless high school students. He wears a cheap “Scream” mask and a large knife, but even that isn’t enough to Shannon Elizabeth shut up already. Her name is Buffy and she’s a cheerleader, and she’s also incredibly sarcastic, which might be a reference to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or maybe not. She ends up with her head in a trash can. Spoilers.

Detached from her body. In case that was unclear.

Surprisingly, the funniest part of “Scary Movie” is the stoners. Marlon Wayans’ character, and his encounter with the killer, is a highlight of the movie. (And this is a movie that features Carmen Electra’s silicone implant being impaled on a knife, so there are a LOT of highlights.)

I also have to appreciate that “Scary Movie” is one of the few films that semi-accurately represents the awkwardness of sex. Well, there usually isn’t a hedgetrimmer involved, but still.

If you’re looking for something that offers scares, look elsewhere. Some movies successfully blend comedy with other genres, but “Scary Movie” is pure parody. However, it’s the perfect palate-cleanser if you get sick of seeing the same horror movie conventions over and over and over. Check it out if it’s on T.V. - and trust me, it will be.

Stay tuned for the next episode of Kwanzooween!
