Life Imitates Art–The Georgia Hiker Killer and His Deadly Run
You may be familiar by now with Gary Michael Hilton and wtih his confession to killing a hiker in Georgia. Now, this is a tragedy, make no mistake…but where things are going to get really interesting–and of course I mean interesting in the truly horrifying sense–is that Gary Michael Hilton was involved in the plot for a 1995 direct-to-video film called Deadly Run. Oh, it exists–it’s available on Netflix.
Film producer Charles Samuel Rael goes into some detail about working with Hilton–Rael even goes so far as to say “It was clear he was a sociopath, but I thought he had a very creative imagination”–who was at least partially responsible for creating the story of a man who took women he met to the Georgia mountains, set them loose, and hunt them like prey.
And man…this really says some horrible things about the nature of horror flicks, doesn’t it? If this didn’t prove it, nothing will–some people should not be watching them. Unstable personalities can do some serious damage when fueled by the creative might of the horror movie. They have power in them…but any power has to be respected and used properly. Responsibly.
You know, of course, that the wackjobs and publicity seekers out there are going to use this case as ammunition for keeping horror movies out of everybody’s hands–like that charming stunt China pulled–so keep your eyes front, fellow horror buffs. Our rights may be coming under attack sooner than anyone thinks.
There’s a pretty good chance that someone will manage to make even defense of our right to watch a scary movie seem odious in light of this, and that’s going to be a sad death in its own right.
