“Lipstick,” “Enemy” Newest Casualties of T.V. Slump

If you have been watching NBC at all in the past four months or so, you’ve probably caught a few ads for the Christian Slater espionage drama “My Own Worst Enemy.” It didn’t look that good, but so what? People watch terrible dramas all the time. You know, critics claim that The Sopranos changed TV drama forever, but I don’t think most of it has advanced much beyond the ER stage. Which is nothing in particular against ER, it’s just…it’s just been the same for several decades. I figured that if Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles does well, then My Own Worst Enemy at least had a shot.

Guess I was wrong.

NBC has just given “Enemy” the axe, despite having saturated its network with advertisements since the Olympics in hope of revitalizing their network. Yet it’s still giving life to “Knight Rider,” “Kath & Kim,” and (thank God) “30 Rock,” despite their ratings being roughly the same. Perhaps they were hoping that “Enemy” would be the new heroes, bringing them out of their slump and allowing them to retain critically acclaimed yet poorly rated shows like “30 Rock?” Surely “Knight Rider” and “Kath & Kim” can’t be long for this world, either. Positive reviews are too few and far between.

Also going under (finally) is “Lipstick (We’re Not Sex and the City, We Promise) Jungle,” which is based on an apparently horrible novel that some people, much braver than I, dared to read. There is nothing appealing about this show and I hope it fades from our national consciousness.

Anyway, most of NBC’s ratings are still coming from that enduring classic, “Law & Order: SVU.” I still don’t understand the appeal, but people are really eating up forensic dramas. Maybe networks should just stick with that formula. They could put their own spin on it, like they did with House (yes, it’s an NBC show). How about a forensic investigator who is also a superhero and works at a wacky office with a former SNL cast member?

Crazier ideas have worked.
