Do you hear that sound? In the distance, I think I can make it out. It sounds like a train barreling towards us or maybe a wild Raptor riding a T Rex. Whatever it is, it’s out of control and heading this way!

The PlayStation 3 seems like it’s finally poised to take over the industry. Can’t you just feel it? Like a sleeping giant, everyone tossed rocks and lobbed spitballs at Sony for the first 18 months. Oh, it doesn’t have any exclusives. Splat! Nice no-thrills online you got there. Splat! Splat! $600 could feed a family of four for a year! Thwap!

But now? With Halo 3 out and Nintendo tap-dancing for old people, Sony seems like a pretty sweet option. It’s still a sizable $400, but it has Blu Ray and a hard drive. That sounds impressive. It still doesn’t have many exclusives, but Metal Gears Solid 4 is coming in a few months. And though its online is still pretty barebones, but have you seen Home? It’s like a palace combined with a temple. It’s divine.

The Wii is still cleaning up at retail (over 400K sold last month), but Sony is finally looking respectable. It outsold Microsoft for the second straight months and finally has a few games on the Top 10 list. Could it be time for Sony to take charge once more? I don’t really care who ends up “winning”, but it will be great for all gamers if Sony can make this a legitimate three console race. More games, more variety, lower prices. Everyone wins!
