LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring and the Rise of Fantasy Films

In adapting one of the 20th century’s most beloved novels, Peter Jackson knew he’d have to tread carefully. Much material was cut due to time constraints, but his passionate treatment of the stories and themes has set the precedent for fantasy cinema. Recent and upcoming novel adaptations like Stardust, The Golden Compass, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Seeker inevitably face comparisons with Jackson’s Oscar-winning triumph.

The Fellowship of the RingDid You Know…

Peter Jackson originally pitched The Lord of the Rings as two feature-length films. New Line, to his surprise, actually suggested he expand it.

C.S. Lewis, the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, was a close friend of J.R.R. Tolkien’s, who created The Lord of the Rings. The second film in The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy is scheduled for a May 2008 release.

Viggo Mortensen was not the first choice to play Aragorn in The Fellowship of the Ring. Stuart Townsend had to be recast at the last minute; phone calls were made, and it was Mortensen who was able to show up on the set after such short notice.

While filming the lake sequence in The Fellowship of the Ring, Sean Astin (Sam Gamgee) impaled his foot on a splinter large enough to pierce through the Hobbit prosthetic. On the DVD extras, other cast members insist that it’s not as big as he remembers.
