Movie Trivia: Anticipation Building for Summer Blockbusters

Why yes, it is presumptuous hyperbole to call upcoming films “blockbusters.” But in this case, I really do think it’s fair. Take Iron Man for instance. It’s pretty much guaranteed that Iron Man will make kajillions of dollars, which may not be an actual number. But the studios don’t care. Somehow, through means they don’t entirely understand, the internet (aka Series of Tubes) managed to build up hype for a comic book movie about a fairly niche character. I mean, I grew up hearing about Superman, Spiderman, The Hulk, and all those guys. I eventually learned about X-Men and the Justice League, but Iron Man stayed beneath my radar until the movie hype began to leak.

iron_man_tony_stark_robert_downey_jr.jpgA lot of people were in the same situation as I was, until now. Now everybody knows Iron Man. Everybody has the opening riff from the Black Sabbath song permanently associated with Iron Man (Mark 1) banging down the door to a terrorist bunker. DA NAA NA NA NA! DANANANANANANA NA NA NAAAAA!

And, most importantly, the die-hard Iron Man fans are happy too. Vic Holtreman of Screen Rant, lifelong Iron Man fan (the verification word for comments on his blog is “Stark,” after the Iron Man’s real last name) is so excited about it that you can’t throw a stone on Screen Rant without hitting an Iron Man post. And that’s the way it should be.

So what’s the latest hype? I knew you were going to ask that. New images and a new clip, that’s what. I’ll leave you to your drooling. (Paramount has already asked Superhero Hype to remove the images, so Jo Blo may be next. Look at them while you can!)

But Tony Stark isn’t the only gun-loving, alcoholic anti-hero coming to the silver screen this year. Yeah, you called it - James Bond. Quantum of Solace, the 22nd film in the official series, is filming like crazy. Some clever spy (HAR HAR get it? Because he’s a spy. I totally get it.) managed to snap some pictures of Daniel Craig leaping about on top of a bus (with a cable, of course). He’s wearing sneakers, which makes some speculate this is just a rehearsal. Or Bond’s styles have changed over the years - who knows?

I am about as excited for these two movies as I ever get over any movie, at least since Lion King II came out direct-to-video. I hope you can all share in my joy - and my Casino Royale trivia (it’s not actually “mine.” That’s called artistic license.)
