It may not be the best of signs that all Hollywood really has to work with at this point is rehashings of crap that’s already been done.

And despite the fact that horror-movies.ca believes that Arena is the second coming of theatrical originality, they’re hampered by one minor fact:

THEY’RE WRONG!!

Check out this plotline and see if you can spot the hole in the logic:

According to Variety, the story centers on a group of modern-day soldiers who are mysteriously transported from the thick of battle to a terrain-shifting landscape where they must fight the best warriors of all different eras and histories in a gladiatorial fight to the death — or be killed by the all-powerful operators of the “Arena.”

Does this sound to anyone else like—da da da dada dada! MORTAL KOMBAT!

Yes! Yes it does! Pull out the licensed characters and slap in some “best warriors of all different eras and histories” and you’ve got a 2D old-school fighter. I truly can’t believe that horror-movies.ca is calling this tripe “new”. The best we can hope for at this point is that they manage to improve or slightly alter the already-used formula to get at least SOMETHING new out of it. But calling the whole thing new is gross overstatement.
