Movie Trivia: Batman Broke?
It may surprise you to know that the mortgage meltdown / housing crisis was not limited solely to us poor schlubs, but also encompassed major Hollywood figures like Batman Begins’ Christian Bale.
Indeed, despite starring roles in Reign of Fire and American Psycho, Bale says he wasn’t earning enough money to support his family. In fact, it apparently got so bad that his house was repossessed–and in somewhere around 2003, he accepted a role he refuses to talk about, simply to generate cash.
Now, the concept of a “paycheck picture” (or its more personal equivalent the “paycheck part”) goes back a long way. Basically, a lot of the garbage that gets released in theatres is the result of someone trying to make some quick cash to do something they want to do or something that might be good. But like any other venture, it takes cash to do it, so you find stars and studios pumping out dreck to get proverbial butts in the equally proverbial seats. Looking over Bale’s entry on the IMDB, however, doesn’t reveal anything all that unusual. Oh, sure, Bale’s appearance on “101 Biggest Celebrity Oops” may not be a prestige part, but not all that unusual. And doing the voice of Howl in “Howl’s Moving Castle” isn’t a real career boost either–Miyazaki anime? Wugh.–but still not outlandish. Nothing in his filmography suggests any kind of serious trouble…so what doesn’t the IMDB know?
Sadly, I don’t. And that means WE don’t. And that’s the most unsettling news of the day.
