Movie Trivia: Brendan Fraser Joins “G.I. Joe” (But Can’t Stop Stunt Mishaps)
There has been surprisingly little talk lately about the live-action G.I. Joe adaptation, coming in the summer of 2009. In fact, the most recent news involved a “mishap” during filming in Prague; this adds G.I. Joe to the ever-increasing list of recent movies with stunts gone very wrong. (New James Bond flick Quantum of Solace recently put a stuntman
into critical condition after a particularly dangerous maneuver.) The AFP reports:
Seven people were injured Saturday in a collision between a bus and several cars during the filming of “G.I. Joe” in the centre of Prague, police and emergency services said.
Video seen on the private Nova television channel showed the bus, and then other vehicles, being hit by an all-wheel-drive vehicle that appeared to have braking problems.
“It happened in a closed area that was rented out to the filmmakers for the weekend,” said Prague police spokeswoman Eva Brozova.
The injuries were minor. It was all a cakewalk compared to an earlier movie mishap, when a stuntman in Prague died during the filming of Rob Cohen’s xXx. (Honestly - and I can’t believe that I’m alone in this - I had completely forgotten about the existence of this movie until I read the article. In fact, I’d be willing to wager that more people have forgotten this movie than remember it, including Vin Diesel.)
But now, some good news - at ComicCon, Brendan Fraser has confirmed that he will be appearing in G.I. Joe.
Friends with director Stephen Sommers since his famous starring role in The Mummy, Fraser will be playing an unknown role. Rumors of his “cameo” have been circling since early this year, but this is the first confirmation that fans have had.
