Now this is a piece of news that comes as a definite and surprising shock to me. It’s been bounced around for the last little bit that there might well be a Dawn of the Dead sequel, and a sequel to the ORIGINAL Dawn of the Dead. You know, the GOOD Dawn of the Dead, not Zack Snyder’s “I’ve Clearly Never Seen A George Romero Movie In My Life Ever But They Paid Me And Really Well Not To Care” version.

In fact, this sequel will rejoin Peter and Francine as they lift off and fly away from the zombie-plagued mall, possibly heading for Canada the way Francine suggested they do in the original. And as interesting as this sounds by itself, early word is that Tony Todd has been tapped to take over the role of Peter.

This, of course, I find very exciting. Tony Todd is a downright horror staple, having appeared in hosts of horror films over the years. He’s even taken on the lead in the 1990 theatrical re-release of Night of the Living Dead! Having played Ben so masterfully, I can’t imagine him doing any less than fantastic as Peter. Especially when you consider the sheer number of loons and goobers out there they might have wheeled in to do the job (If Eddie Murphy wound up as Peter I would probably wind up in a fetal position on my bathroom floor for like a week), Tony Todd definitely looks like a top-rank choice.

Of course, all of this is still the very earliest form of projection–it’s not even a sure thing there will BE a Dawn of the Dead 2, but if there is, man, will I ever be looking forward to it! And until we get more specific word, there’s plenty of Dead series trivia to go around on Kwanzoo.
