Movie Trivia: Emily The Strange Movie–Why You Should Be Saddened
Vitriol, of course, is absolutely nothing new to me and you should probably be used to hearing it from me by now. But sometimes I’ve got good reason, and it’s those reasons I bring back for you to discover right here on this bandwidth, o my readership.
A long time back, in a Barnes and Noble far away, I found a book in the humor section about a certain young lady who went by the unusual name Emily the Strange. Now, this was something of an appeal to me personally, because strange stuff is my life and livelihood, so I took a look. Emily was indeed as strange as advertised, with a collection of cats and an equally extensive collection of bizarre events. It was downright fun reading about her.
At least until the great merchandising engine got fired up. Celebrities started wearing the brand! Even Britney Spears, raging psychotic that she is, got in on it. And the media train kept right on a-rollin’, and suddenly, this strange little girl with strange little adventures and strange little cats became a strange little marketing gimmick, and you now see the end result.
Dark Horse Comics bought up Emily rights like fat kids buy cake, and soon enough, Dark Horse got carte blanche from Universal to make movies willy-nilly with their properties. And so, Emily the Strange is now a movie. And probably sooner rather than later, an action figure, a toy line, a Burger King kid’s meal and everything in between.
Oh, don’t get me wrong–the thought of a little character that was originally designed for stickers and skateboards hitting the big time is cheery to say the least–but there’s still a note of sorrow that comes when everybody manages to find what once was a fairly well kept secret.
The movie, meanwhile, is still in its earliest stages–only a producer has been announced so far–but there’ll be plenty more news to come, I’m sure. And until then, we have plenty of fantasy movie trivia to keep us all well occupied.
