Movie Trivia: Far Up, Far Out, Far Moore

To some, he is the best James Bond - to others, the worst. But whatever you think of him, almost everyone agrees that Sir Roger Moore is one of the sweetest men in show business.

Roger MooreTaking on the mantle of Britain’s most famous spy with 1973’s Live and Let Die, so far Moore has had the longest run of any actor in the franchise. (Unofficially Sean Connery’s appearance in the non-EON Productions Never Say Never Again in 1983 would outdo Moore, but it is not part of the Bond canon.) He played the role with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, which some fans found charming, and others found irritating. Though Bond creator Ian Fleming had mentioned Moore as a potential Bond before his death, he was basing the recommendation on Moore’s gravitas as Simon Templar in The Saint.

Though he has a worldwide base of fans, Roger Moore is not particularly respected in England, especially by critics. In recent years he has become more of a personality than an actor, appearing at special events and occasionally taking on cameo roles (such as his turn on Alias). Actors who have worked with Moore say he is a lovable co-worker and quite the prankster, though never in a mean-spirited way.

Since 1983 Moore has devoted much of his time to UNICEF, becoming a Goodwill Ambassador in 1991. In the last few decades, he’s been using his celebrity pull for charity purposes more than anything else.

And now, at the urging of many friends and fans, Roger Moore is about to share his memoirs with us.

He first announced these plans last October, just a few days before turning 80. The book, My Word Is My Bond, will be ghostwritten by his personal assistant, Gareth Owen.

Until printing, of course, you can always sink some time into the James Bond trivia on Kwanzoo - even if you don’t want more of Moore.
