Movie Trivia: Ghost House Digs Up The Basement
It probably won’t come as much of a surprise to anyone that Ghost House, Sam Raimi’s production company, is looking to flood the direct-to-video market with its own special brand of horror titles. And when I say flood, I mean it—Ghost House Underground is projecting to release twelve to twenty movies over the course of a year, starting in October of 2008, aided and abetted by companies Grindstone and distributor Lions Gate.
What I love about this is that finally, someone gets it. Check out what Rob Tapert of Ghost House had to say about the direct to video market:
“We believe the next great horror film is going to come from fresh, bold voices working outside the system. We aim to find these films and share them with genre fans everywhere.”
Yes. Absolutely, yes. A million times, yes! The theaters have abandoned fresh and bold for gimmicks and crap. Showing your movie in 3-D may have been big and impressive in, oh, the FIFTIES, but today it’s just another gimmick to distract audiences from your cheesy little crapfest. You’ve got to go indie to get the originality any more, and to get indie, you either have to be connected, on the festival circuit, or going to the video store. The pool of DTV features lots of independent film, stuff that’s only distributed through names like Anchor Bay, Heretic, MTI, and yes, Lions Gate.
