Movie Trivia: Keanu Reeves Says No More Sequels?
Forget just Constantine: In recent interviews, everyone’s favorite stone-faced action hero has made clear his decision to never, ever star in a sequel ever again.
From your mouth to God’s ears, Keanu.
Could it be that someone in mainstream Hollywood has actually caught on the to the fact that sequels are almost always terrible? It is possible that Reeves was as disappointed by The Matrix: Revolutions as everyone else? Whatever his reasoning, this decision is a happy one. It’s downright noble. Sequels often offer a lot of money, and it’s bold of him to preemptively turn it all down.
Of course, who knows what will happen if someone decides to give him a sequel he can’t refuse? Those in “the industry” are famous for making bold statements and not backing them up. (Remember all those actors who were going to move to France or the Caribbean or whatever if Bush got elected again? Where are they? Oh, Hollywood, that’s right.)
Whatever happens, Keanu Reeves, we salute you. And I think I speak for everyone when I say: whoa.

First: Great site, great idea, great blog entries!
On Keanu’s decision to ‘never’ do another sequel: I have to admit, 60-70% of the films he’s made wouldn’t make a viable sequel - most people enjoy “one-off’s”, one-hit-wonders, cult classics, whatever you want to call them; they tend to say “it’s been done”, and are afraid to see a sequel for fear of ruining the respect the original earned. Personally, however, there is something about these darker-side movies, comic books come to life, and dark fantasy action flicks that draw me, and a lot of others, to watch the sequels. Had Constantine not been brought to the big screen, I never would have heard of it, or the comic books that follow that genre. If it were not for the Wochowski Bros., I would most likely never have seen a second and third Matrix movie (say what you will, they were second only to George Lucas in their ability to draw an audience, and a loyal following, thru the story told over the course of a “3-quel” - or more). Should Keanu change his mind in this case? I think so. Why? For the same reason he might have had for returning for the 2nd and 3rd Matrix: it’s different. His work in the last ten years has been amazing when compared to the previous ten, and I’m confident in saying that should he decide to sign on for a second Constantine, I’m not alone in knowing I would follow the buzz right to the box office to have a look.
I agree: Kudos, Keanu…indeed, “whoa”.
