Movie Trivia: Robocop’s Return?

A policeman in his prime, taken down by a cruel twist of fate. Brought back in half-machine form to continue bringing his unique brand of justice to the streets.

robocopWho is this man?

Joe Swanson of Family Guy?

Well, yes, but mostly RoboCop.

RoboCop is more than just an ’80s pop culture icon; he is a symbol of the kind of hopes and dreams we, as a culture, harbor for our future. The hope that, someday, we will all be able to replace our fragile bodies with machines. And shoot people.

Naturally enough, RoboCop was followed by a couple of unpopular sequels back in the ’80s and ’90s. But now, it’s time for Hollywood to bring RoboCop back from the (mechanical) grave.

A recent press release from MGM reveals that they will be continuing the RoboCop franchise in some way. Whether it will be another sequel or a reboot is currently unclear.

Whatever their plans are for RoboCop, I hope they remember what made the original such a sensation - the heavy reliance on satire and humor to make the RoboCop premise work. And that it doesn’t turn out looking too much like Iron Man.

  1. I’d buy that for a dollar! That and it’d be good to get back to the old days, when you too could hold like three thousand bullets inside a gun that should have a clip size of thirty tops.
