Movie Trivia: Scarlett Johansson Goes Musical
Once upon a time, calling an actress “multi-talented” was redundant. Singing and dancing were often the minimum requirements for being a success in show business, and any additional talents could only help. But with the increasing emphasis on realism in film, being able to play a part convincingly took precedence over showmanship.
Now, those actresses who bravely venture into other media are almost a novelty. And Scarlett Johansson, bless her, has decided to join them.
Star of movies like Match Point, Lost in Translation, and Ghost World, Johansson has gained a reputation for restrained sensuality and intelligent performances. Why she felt the need to prove herself in the musical world is beyond most, and it’s an even bigger mystery why she decided to do an album of Tom Waits covers.
The first music video from her album has been released, featuring the song “Falling Down.” I say “featuring” because the video and the song barely have anything to do with each other - the video contains no lip-syncing, and, in fact, not much of anything. Kind of like Lost in Translation if you remove all of Bill Murray’s scenes.
The song itself is pretty dismal. While I’m definitely a musical pedant with a very sensitive ear, I can’t imagine finding Johansson’s vocals pleasant. It’s pretty clearly a song for a male voice, and she’s not the one to break the tradition. Joan Baez she ain’t.
Stick to the movies, Scarlett.
