Movie Trivia: Somehow, Pakistan Got Involved In Horror

And now these guys are in on it!You know, I’m downright baffled by this next piece of news. I’ve found a lot of places that are exporting horror titles, trying to get in on the grand gold rush that the direct to video horror industry has been since roughly 2002. And in that search, the atlas has grown steadily—Malaysia, Brazil, Chile…plenty of others. But this one just might take the cake.

Pakistan.

No, seriously! Called Zibahkhana, translated to Hell’s Ground, it’s a zombie movie (which isn’t much of a surprise—seems like plenty of people’s first movies is a zombie movie as they’re not difficult or costly to produce) and it’s just passed the censors of Pakistan (of course Pakistan has censors) with only less than ten seconds cut. Which is a bit of a surprise given the state things are in over there, what with all the Talibans and fatwas and assorted whatnot, but stranger things have happened. One of those is that Hell’s Ground actually managed to win a Jury Special Award for Best Gore. In addition, it will also be the first ever non-35mm, HDV feature film ever released in Pakistan.

Which makes me pretty interested—have the Pakistanis been sitting on a new special effects technology that we’re just now seeing?
