Movie Trivia: Spider-Man, Spider-Man, Does Whatever a Franchise Can
Good things often come in packages of three. The trilogy is the perfect way to parse a long story; there is the call to adventure, the journey, then the climax/journey home. The trilogy is a great way to express mythic structure. And that’s why good things come in threes.
Unfortunately, so do bad things.
When it came time for Sam Raimi to make the first live-action Spider-Man movie ever, he got a bit carried away in the premise. It was, after all, a Spider-Man movie. People would see it no matter what. It just needed to be a spectacle! Forget those pesky things like dialogue and character development! Show me the Green Goblin dangling a busfull of children over a city backdrop! SHOW ME MARY JANE IN PERIL!
Luckily, Spider-Man actually succeeded as such. Barely. With the questionable decision to cover up Willem Dafoe’s face and voice being the most irritating part of the movie, it was mostly a success - sweeping panoramic views of the city, Spidey-style, atoned for many sins.
Then came Spider-Man 2. And then, God forbid, Spider-Man 3.
Though audiences are divided on the second installment, pretty much everyone agrees that Spider-Man 3 was a massive trainwreck. Though self-consciously funny in parts, it focused far too heavily on Peter Parker’s personal life, which has never been particularly interesting or relevant to his heroics. Not even Topher Grace as Venom could save it.
But if you thought the Spider-Man film franchise was over, then you are, no offense, a silly goose. The seemingly endless piles of comic storylines ensure that Spider-Man 4 will come - but when, and in what form?
We don’t know much at the moment. Sam Raimi will not write this time; he may direct or produce, but he is expected to surrender creative control to screenwriter James Vanderbilt. The film will focus on only two of the many potential Spider-Man villians.
Was Raimi’s withdrawal voluntary, or is he being punished for the poor reception of Spider-Man 3? No one can be sure, but we can all hope for better things in Spidey’s future.
