Movie Trivia: Stacie Ponder–Horror’s Calendar Girl
Again, the always charming Stacie Ponder has come back with a new and fresh look at the horror industry, and once again, she’s got a list. The lady knows her horror, no doubt, so when she came out with a list for the best horror films for each month of the year, my interest was piqued.
And for the most part, I actually found myself agreeing with her. Oh sure, it’s next to impossible to find an actual horror movie for Thanksgiving (the fact that she found one is even scarier than the film she found!). But this wouldn’t be much of a blog entry if I didn’t swing in and do a little Monday-morning quarterbacking on Stacie Ponder’s fantastic list. So off I go!
Her May entry showed some serious weakness in horror knowledge—as well as simple research skills. Stacie, come on! I know mothers aren’t a big theme in horror, but you could’ve done better than Troma’s wreckage of a film Mother’s Day. It’s called PSYCHO, Stacie. A boy has no better friend than his mother…even if she’s currently a desiccated corpse in the attic.
Her June entry, trying for a riff on Flag Day (which just happens to be her birthday!), is better but still a little weak, even if I can understand the bias. She might well have done better to go a week later to MY birthday…and occasionally, Father’s Day. With Father’s Day as your impetus, you get access to The Stepfather series, Head of the Family, and of course, the entire Texas Chainsaw Massacre series as well as plenty of other Texas Chainsaw Knockoffs that feature frightening fathers controlling a family of psychopathic children. But she’s got THAT one annexed for later, which leads me to—
–her August entry, which is a feeble stab in the dark with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Now, we all know that August is a hot month…but surely it’s not hotter than Hell itself! For a downright cooling sensation, why not try and sit through Clive Barker’s godawful Hellraiser series, possibly manufactured by demons as a torture test for film buffs. Also available are the first ever Chuck Norris horror film Hellbound, and the tiny little laughable cultish classic, Hell Comes to Frogtown. And if you can actually FIND it, bonus points to you.
I could keep going but much of Stacie’s work will stand on its own. And thus, I’ll refrain from nitpicking any harder.
You’re welcome.
