“Natural Born Killers”–You’d Be Amazed Where It’s From!

I was all kinds of amazed when I made the discovery that Natural Born Killers, a work of savagery unparalleled to this very day as far as I’m concerned has a very unusual pedigree. Get this–Natural Born Killers is actually based off an early shooting script by none other than Quentin Tarantino!

At this point my jaw hits the floor. That movie? That horrifying and shocking and morally bankrupt and absolutely incredible adrenaline-fueled carnival ride of a movie is connected to the chattiest waste of time in Hollywood? I was unequivocally amazed.

The Sad, Strange Tale of Mickey and Mallory

And the more I dug into the story behind Natural Born Killers, the more amazed I got. Yes, I went into realms of amazement that can’t be quantified by mere mortals. Here are the high points as I’ve been able to find out:

  • Quentin Tarantino actually considered the original script an immature work he wasn’t interested in directing any longer, and thus sold the script to a friend for the low, low price of one dollar!
  • Quentin’s unnamed buddy then turned around and sold said script to filmmaker Oliver Stone for a significantly larger chunk of change.
  • Stone and company then ran the work through an extensive modification process, then filmed the result: Natural Born Killers.

To Quentin Tarantino: Rediscover Your Roots. Hasta Pronto.

In closing, as an open letter to a once-great director who still has a little life left in him–Death Proof was proof enough for me!–go back to the video store, man. Immerse yourself in that great wide range of films. Talk movies with random passersby. Become the same Tarantino that wrote a wild ride like Natural Born Killers (sans the violence), but interject it with the wisdom of experience.
Then you’ll have me buying a ticket again.
