New Orleans In Mid-Recovery Thanks To Movies
Now, this was a welcome piece of news–a downright boost to an otherwise flagging day.
The word in from Studio Briefing lays it out nicely:
New Orleans may still remain a long way from recovering from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, but a record number of movies and television pilots are being shot there this year — 55 so far, according to the Louisiana film and television development office and reported in today’s (Wednesday) USA Today. “In a recovery economy, it’s amazing to see what this industry has done for us,” Jennifer Day, director of the New Orleans film and video office, told the newspaper pointing out that this year’s productions represent an estimated $100 million influx into the local economy. Noting that film production accounted for $400 million in spending in the state of Louisiana last year, Amber Havens of the Louisiana film and television development office, told USA Today: “If there ever was a silver lining to Katrina, this has been it.”
Now THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is some downright happy news. Remember, it’s not just the big studios running productions down there–there’s plenty of minor studios and indie producers that are bombing on down to the Big Easy for a white-hot chunk of filmmaking etouffe.
I’m downright amazed that that much work is going on down there, and I find myself curious as to what the plots of all that Lousiana filmmaking is. There’s only so many things you can do in any one area, really, before you start repeating yourself. But for the sake of all the folks down there who desperately need an infusion of cash–ANY infusion of cash!–I hope they milk it for all its worth.
And until we figure out just how far they can riff on a theme, try the thriller movie trivia on Kwanzoo for lots of similar drama / action hybrids.
